The Marches are an all-female 4 piece band from Glasgow whose musical influences range from PJ Harvey, to Fleetwood Mac, to Taylor Swift. Since forming in early 2024, the band have already made their mark in the Scottish music scene; from playing festivals and selling out headline shows to becoming BBC Introducing Scotland’s Featured Artist in 2025.
Their latest single ‘She’ sounds a little different to some of their earlier releases, giving off a sort of soft country vibe, and showing that The Marches can pretty much do it all! They sing about a woman who believes she is connected to the universe, with a focus on exploring identity and vulnerability, all while using beautiful imagery throughout.
As soon as I heard the first few strums of the guitar I could immediately feel how different this was to their other songs. I think this shows that they are really settling into their artistry and aren’t afraid to explore different vibes or stick to one specific sound. I love the celestial metaphors peppered throughout the song but my favourite is in the first verse: “Freckles on your skin / Constellations for her to trace”. This is a great example of the amazing imagery used within the lyrics. You can really picture what they’re singing so clearly.
The chord progression of the chorus is one of my favourite things about this tune because of how it contrasts to the verses. The first part of each line of the chorus has a beautiful harmony and at first I wished it had continued throughout the entire line or even if it was just at the end of each line instead but those are common decisions when adding harmonies so I actually really like that it’s different.
The last chorus is different to the others and I wish there was maybe a little bridge just before as it is such a beautiful climax but it kind of came out of nowhere and I feel like I didn’t get a chance to appreciate where the song was going before it was over.
I really like the direction that The Marches decided to go in with this song. I enjoyed the ABAB structure (even if I am a sucker for a bridge as previously mentioned), I love the vocal quality that the lead singer, Katie Palmer, has and the calmness it brings to this song, and I love the overall vibe of this tune. It reminds me a little of Beabadoobee’s catalogue, especially with the chords used in the chorus and the introduction of that melancholic minor chord. I would love for The Marches to continue with this country-esque/folk sound but I also want them to continue trying new things and I’m excited to hear what’s next!
