Single Review: The Worry People – Gold

At first glance, Gold, the newest single from The Worry People, is an indie rock banger, and it absolutely is that, but there’s a bit more to it.

This song is filled with unusual, syncopated riffs and melodies that make it something quite special.

Gold has an epic, anthemic feel, with soaring melodies that lift its emotive lyrics over distorted guitars and pounding drums. Soft synths and Albert Hammond Jr. style lead guitar licks (you know that 2000s mobile phone guitar sound) really elevate this into a catchy and memorable indie dance night floor filler.

A high point for me is a moshpit breakdown, followed by another. Yeah! Two dirty breakdowns in a row. Love that. They come to tell you it’s time to stop bobbing your head and break loose. I am positive that these guys, though I’ve never seen them live, will put on a great, lively show. Full of dynamics and energy. I bet it makes for a proper sweaty night.

While the vocals are catchy, with a sort of indie pop feel, there is something melancholic about them for me. Or perhaps the longing of the lyrics leads me to that conclusion. It’s calling out to someone… and it caught me.

As evident from Gold and a listen through their back catalogue, it is clear that The Worry People love sound. Their tunes are full of interesting ear candy underneath what is clearly a signature sound for them of heavy drums, big vocals, and lots of guitars, so I’m excited to see an album pop up someday. Despite only a few years together and currently only a few singles out there, they have amassed some attention from podcasts and radio stations and I can see why. I expect we’ll see a lot more from these lads soon.
