James Michael Rodgers’ set at Drygate for Celtic Connections was phenomenal . A few weeks ago, he was stripped-back acoustic at the Glad Café, but this time he went big—full band, bass, piano, sax, backup singers—melding folk, soul, and some big-band energy. The crowd, chilling at picnic tables, couldn’t stop bopping and swaying as he burst into “Closer to You”—hat off, hair loose, fully rocking out.

His song writing has that Neil Young or Dylan vibe, and he didn’t shy away from heavy themes—his song “I Don’t Believe You” tackled the Gaza crisis head-on. His broad Scottish accent, similar to other Scottish singers perhaps from Paisley but with his own flair—hisses, whistles and clicks included—made it all the more gripping. And the look? Red corduroy trousers, chore jacket, Chauffeur’s hat, and a silk scarf, classic cool.

His songs paint vivid scenes you can step right into—familiar places and themes that feel like home. The whole vibe is drenched in nostalgia, turning everyday, ordinary life into beautifully crafted, evocative lyrics. You need to check out his new recordings on Spotify—his music definitely takes you somewhere… probably Saltcoats.
