Hailing from the north-east of Scotland Lupine Raine consist of a trio of brothers, Ben 10, Joey & Tam alongside powerhouse vocalist Jensen, one listen to their debut EP guarantees that they will be your new favourite alt-rock act.
But don’t just take my word for it, the band’s recent place in the finals of Metal 2 the Masses for a chance to earn their slot at Bloodstock this Summer speaks for itself. You can catch the final at La Belle Angele in Edinburgh on Saturday the 23rd May. With 5 incredible acts battling it out it is sure to be an unforgettable evening.
The debut EP entitled ‘It Was Never Just One Thing’ boasts three outstanding tracks kicking off with the debut single ‘Echoes‘, a slow building track that is built around Jensen’s stunning vocals. That is until around the two and a half minute mark where there is a shift into a truly powerful rock song, a theme that is also mirrored in the lyrics with the concepts of time, change and a search for something real or ”echoes of a life before”. In a way Echoes sums up Lupine Raine, a song and a band that can cover all bases.
There’s no slow building involved as we kick into track 2 – ‘Blame (It Ain’t on Me)’, an explosive rock anthem right from the beginning, it was the first song I heard from Lupine Raine and it instantly made me a fan. In their own words ”Blame is about people who live as victims of their own circumstances. There’s always someone or something else to to blame. This track is about washing your hands of that and making it clear; that’s on you – it ain’t on me.” It’s quite simply is just a truly excellent rock song and the breakdown is something that the likes of Biffy Clyro or Bring Me the Horizon would be proud of. A pit opener like no other.
Rounding out the EP is ‘All in All‘ which, of the three, shows off the band’s wonderful vocal harmonies the best and also arguably has the best chorus, it certainly has the most sing-a-long potential. I haven’t seen the band perform live yet but I am told this is the usual set closer and it’s easy to see why. It’s a track reminiscent of earlier Paramore albums, Extra shout out for an amazing outro guitar riff as well, face-melting stuff.
If this is just the beginning for Lupine Raine I can’t wait to see what the future holds, with the musical and vocal ability this band possess the sky truly is the limit. As mentioned earlier you can catch the band performing in Edinburgh on the 23rd May and you can also catch them in Dundee very soon as they support French rockers FENCES\\\\ at Hidden on the 10th April.
