Mike McKenzie aims to create a safe, creative, and inclusive space within his music and live shows. This is echoed in the variety of venues and shows Mike plays (such as Sofar Sounds), allowing music to be accessible to many. To date, Mike has had some incredible wins—BBC Radio Scotland Singer-Songwriter of the Year 2019—and most recently, he has been signed by Metro 13 Records, who have worked with Snow Patrol and Mogwai.
When talking about Out Alive, Mike said, “I’ve never been more proud and excited about a release. It’s the first single from my debut album and marks the beginning of a whole new chapter for me as an artist.”
Out Alive explores the complexity of feeling lost and alone. Mike beautifully illustrates the importance of finding joy in the little things, the many forms that strength can take and the effort required to escape the darkness and stay alive.
The song opens with a dark, droning piano, swiftly followed by McKenzie’s striking vocal before erupting into an indie-pop chorus. While this shift feels like a stark contrast to the beginning of the track it fits exceptionally well and creates an element of positivity.
Whether Out Alive tells the tale of Mike’s personal struggles or is a complete work of fiction, there is a warmth, understanding and nurture woven into the lyrics. It makes the song incredibly relatable. However this song resonates with you, optimism is threaded throughout, reflected in the more upbeat chorus—a reminder that making it Out Alive is possible, whatever your struggles.
Mike McKenzie should be extremely proud of this track and the new chapter ahead. With his recent signing to Metro 13 Records, he has announced a new album due out in April. If the tracks are as raw, honest, and heartfelt as Out Alive, then it is sure to be a work of art!
