From scorching heat to regaining control.

There is no ordinary sunshine in the Sahara Desert – only blinding light, dusty air, and inescapable heat, beating down the neck and burning the soles of the feet. It’s an unstoppable, destructive force of nature.
Yet it is the severity of this environment that can inspire, and has found its way into Dom Malin’s new single, ‘Sahara Sun’.
Having consistently released songs since 2020, been endorsed by ‘BBC Introducing’, and amassed nearly 44,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, the British singer-songwriter Dom Malin has long cemented himself as a strong act in the indie-folk music scene.
His debut EP is due in June 2026, and the first single tackles the subject of external pressure and burnout, which he describes as being ‘like walking barefoot out in the Sahara sun’.
Crafted in a place of uncertainty and exhaustion, the track addresses the loss of one’s identity in the face of other people’s expectations. However, feeling ‘tired of being tired, (…) alive, (…) afraid’ leads not to surrender, but to a moment of clarity and resistance:
But I got nothing to prove / Am I a fool / For trying to live up to you
Relatable and honest, the song becomes an anthem of individuality and authenticity, encouraging self-definition and rediscovery.
Musically, it mirrors the emotional weight of the lyrics. Malin’s delivery infuses it with sadness, his vocals echoing at times as if coming from a far corner of an empty room. Simultaneously, he draws the listener in – his gentleness creates intimacy, and there are moments when his voice feels close, almost brushing against your cheek softly.
Previously associated with delicate acoustic tunes, Dom Malin expands his repertoire when ‘Sahara Sun’ begins with a vibrant riff that carries the essence of indie rock, while the drums keep the track grounded and subtle effects add texture and depth. The arrangements arrive in waves, dipping and rising, bringing dynamism and captivating attention, and the abrupt, perfectly-timed pauses interrupt the flow, intensifying the impact.
While the song sounds bright and upbeat, sorrow sits just beneath the surface, creating an irresistible blend of the uplifting warmth of Boy & Bear and the haunting melancholy of Fink.
‘Sahara Sun’ is an atmospheric indie-folk track that attracts with its melodiousness and accessibility, yet impresses with its complexity and meaning. The single sets the bar high for Dom Malin’s upcoming EP, and if this is any indication of the record’s quality, there is no doubt that he will deliver something very special.
