Glasgow’s favourite funk-disco band are back with a new groovetastic single.
Sonny Leto and his Funk Militia were one of my absolute favourite discoveries of 2024. The social media gods brought me the sweet sounds in a targeted ad when they released their previous single Love That Set Me Free and it was safe to say I was hooked!
Being a saxophone player, there is a part of me that instantly is drawn in by a horn section and the funk malitia horn section is fineee but the instant feel to move to the funk bass line and grooves within their tunes is what reeled me in initially without a shadow of a doubt! They just radiate instant happiness with their songs, it’s happy funk with some disco vibes, I believe it’s impossible to stand still and/or be sad with Sonny Leto and the Funk Militia in your ears.
The band are back with their latest single Save Me which was released earlier in the month and it leans heavier on the disco side with the nostalgic 80s keys riff in the intro. Save Me takes on a different feel to their previous release Love that set me free. The pace is slightly more laid back, focusing on the syncopated grooves in the bass and drums, both of which lock flawlessly together, while the horns take a bit more of a back seat throughout.
Sonny himself gets to show off his vocal range throughout, his stunning falsetto is to be admired and adds real smooth texture to the song. We may not fully know what Sonny needs saved from, other than “himself” but what is clear is there is a nature of vulnerability, exploring themes of not quite feeling like yourself and possibly being your own worst enemy which ruins the relationships around you.
Save me, be me, I feel like a king without my crown
Sonny Leto and the Funk Militia are so slick live, providing a set filled with ‘wow’ moments and create grooves you can’t help but move to. They were a real inspiration to push on with creating the Bonnie Scotland Presents brand because it’s bands like this I hope to promote and share the happiness with others. Let’s see about bringing them to Dundee…
Where can you catch the band play?
